Looking back, I recognise that I was always ahead of the times when it came to animal wellbeing. I was searching for holistic answers to animal health and healing as early as the late 1980’s, when I was still a teenager. At that time, in the UK, essential oils were just becoming popular for people and Reiki healing was a “new age” method! I was told by my career’s advisor at college that there was “no such thing as equine chiropractors”. I wanted to be an equine therapist and in 1990 I simply couldn’t find a class other than training to be a vet.

I wasn’t deterred and avidly read anything relating to alternative therapies, especially if it mentioned animals. I created my own home study folder by collecting magazine articles and I wrote to many pioneers in equine holistic health to find out more. In the mid 1990’s, after reading about her in a magazine, I met the amazing Caroline Ingraham on a day course called “Aromatherapy for horses” held in the New Forest. I was hooked!

It was an extraordinary day and the hands-on session was quite frankly life changing. I just couldn’t forget the way the horse had repeatedly looked around at his shoulder and then at the bottle of essential oil. As soon as the oil was stroked onto the place on his body that he was showing us, he relaxed and yawned and fell asleep. This horse had been in a great deal of pain for a long time, with tests proving inconclusive. The essential oil was something he needed for his healing to begin.

When my own horse, Amy became incredibly lame with arthritis, I had the opportunity to study in depth with Caroline in her methods, which by then were called Applied Zoopharmacognosy. The lessons I learned about animal self-selection and the fact that I could help my own horse with her pain and mobility issues was the catalyst for me in becoming a professional animal healer.

I look around now at how things have evolved over the past 40 years in our understanding of holistic methods for ourselves and for animals and I’m so happy! I’m so happy that things have changed because offering choices to our animals is so, so important.
